The recent reaffirmation by the traditional rulers of Bende North (Umunna) on the need to preserve and respect the zoning arrangement governing Bende Federal Constituency has once again brought the issue of equity to the forefront of public discuss which we consider as both commendable and timely. Their position underscores an enduring truth: peace, unity and political stability are sustained when agreements founded on equity, fairness and mutual respect are honoured. However, if equity is truly the cornerstone of our political culture, then it should not be invoked selectively. The same principles that justify rotational leadership for the House of Representatives should equally apply to the Bende North State Constituency seat. Equity must be holistic, not occasional; consistent, not convenient. It should never be embraced in one instance and abandoned in another because of changing political interests. Political power-sharing has, over the years, served as a mechanism for strengthening trust among communities, promoting inclusion and preventing feelings of exclusion or domination. No community should enjoy enduring political privilege at the expense of another. Leadership in Umunna is not the exclusive preserve of any town or group. Every component community deserves a fair opportunity to contribute to governance and representation. It is against this backdrop that many advocates of rotational leadership believe that Alayi should be supported to produce the next representative for Bende North State Constituency. Such support would not merely benefit one community; it would reinforce the values of justice, reciprocity and shared ownership that have long held Umunna together. Within this context, Barr. Dr. Amb. Jonas Okorie Udensi, the candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), is presented by his supporters as someone whose candidacy aligns with the principles of equity and inclusive leadership. They argue that supporting him would affirm the long-standing spirit of fairness while offering the constituency an opportunity to benefit from accountable, accessible and transparent representation. The traditional institution occupies a unique place as the moral conscience and custodian of the customs and values of our people. By encouraging consistency in the application of equity across all elective offices, not only the federal seat, the royal fathers can help foster greater unity, reduce political tension and encourage peaceful participation in the democratic process. What is good for the goose should indeed be good for the gander. The Equity Charter should neither be truncated nor reinterpreted to suit temporary political convenience. Agreements inspire confidence only when they are honoured consistently. When fairness becomes predictable, trust grows stronger, brotherhood flourishes and future generations inherit a political culture rooted in justice rather than expediency. As Umunna looks to the future, let equity remain our compass. Let fairness transcend personalities and political parties. Let rotational leadership continue to serve as a bridge of unity rather than a point of division. By doing so, we will preserve the harmony our forebears cherished and build a more inclusive political future where every community has a genuine sense of belonging and equal opportunity to lead.
